Why is Fibre so Important in Our Diet?

Everybody understands why is fibre so important in our diet, but many don’t actually follow through with getting a sufficient intake. There are so many benefits of consuming fibre, putting it into your everyday diet is essential. In this blog we will talk about the benefits of fibre, why it is so important and how you can easily introduce it into your daily diet. So without further ado, why is fibre so important in our diet?

Why is fibre so important in our diet?- The Benefits

Fibre cleans your system, acting as a scrub brush: This effect of fibre helps clean out bacteria and other buildups in your intestines and colon, effectively reducing your risk for colon cancer.

Fibre makes you slowly absorb sugar into your bloodstream: The sugar in those foods is absorbed slower when you consume foods high in fibre. This keeps your blood glucose levels from rising too fast. When you don’t consume fibre, you can feel hungry soon after eating and lead to overeating.

Fibre makes your intestines move faster: helping your body signal when it is full.

Fibre helps keep you regular: A high-fibre diet helps you have regular and soft bowel movements, reducing constipation.

Why is fibre so important in our diet? – The Two Types of Fibre

Dietary fibre (also known as roughage or bulk): The body process’ this fibre like no other. Fibre passes through the digestive system relatively intact until it leaves the body. This is different to how the body processes fats, carbohydrates or proteins. This plays a role in how it supports various health functions.

All different fibres have different qualities, so you should take into consideration the differences between different fibres. The two main fibres are soluble fibre and insoluble fibre. These two different fibres are not in competition with each other. Most plants have different variations between them, some with more than another. With fats and proteins, you want as many different types as possible to get some variation within your diet.

Soluble fibre: Soluble fibre will dissolve in water into a gel-like substance. This helps it play an important role in the digestive system.

Insoluble fibre: When put in water, insoluble fibre will not dissolve, but it still helps your digestive system. This draws water into the stool, supporting regularity. Insoluble fibre is behind much of the commonly known benefits.

Why is fibre so important in our diet? – Easy ways to add fibre into your daily diet

The benefits of fibre are undeniable for everybody in the family. Get as creative as you wish with the different ingredients to a fibre full diet. You can check food labels for the amount of dietary fibre to find bread, cereals and other foods. This list will help you find different foods that you will find you can easily add to your diet:

Whole grain breads (containing at least 3 grams of fibre per serving) It is a common misconception that you can use any whole grain breads, but this won’t do it as many varieties of whole wheat bread have insufficient fibre. Read the nutrition label to make sure the bread contains the required amount of fibre.

Fruits and vegetables contain fibre. Don’t be deceived, drinking juice does not contain fibre- it’s just the whole fruit.  This is why eating fruit is much healthier than drinking juice.

Brown rice – Don’t be deceived, white rice does not have any fibre because the husks have been removed.

Cereals (containing at least 5 grams of fibre per serving) Cereals made using whole grains, bran and rolled oats usually contain enough fibre. Check the nutrition label for accurate details on how much fibre there is per serving.

Beans and legumes are great sources of both fibre and protein.

If you cannot easily get foods with fibre into your diet, you can always quickly make a shake and use oat apple fibre to add to it. This will easily give you the right amount of daily fibre, which you can have during the day or at night time.

If whipping up a shake is still too much time that’s being taken out of your day, a supplement in tablet form will also do the same job. You can take fibre and herb tablets daily to keep healthy.
